Johann Petitjean obtained his doctorate from the University of Paris I in 2011 with a thesis intitled "Si avvisano che… Formes, usages et diffusion de l’information politique en Italie (v. 1570-1670)".
He has published various articles regarding historiography, early modern Avvisi, political communication, manuscript and visual cultures, wars and intelligence in the Mediterranean area. He co-coordinates the research program Ecritures grises: les instruments du travail administratif en Europe méridionale (XIIe-XVIIe siècles) in Rome.
