Ms Marion Brétéché
Ph. D student in History at Paris-Sorbonne University

Marion Brétéché is currently completing a Ph. D thesis in History, directed by Professor Lucien Bély, at Paris-Sorbonne University. This study is entitled« “L’histoire du siècle courant” : écrire l’actualité de l’Europe à la fin du XVIIe siècle, entre histoire et information politique (1680-1740) ».

She has published several papers dedicated to writing practices, the publication of political information, and the issue of authorship in Holland’s press, in the late seventeenth century.

Marion Brétéché is a member of the Interdisciplinary Research Group about Literary History (GRIHL) at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales since 2006, and an active member of the research group « Diplomatie et Paix » affiliated to Paris-Sorbonne University since 2008.

Research interests:

• The practices of writing news and history and (more generally) the dissemination of information in 17th- and 18th-Century Europe.
• History of printing and the book
• The social history of the realm of book production, with particular emphasis on the lives of authors
• The history of France and the United Provinces
• The history of refuge and exile
• The history of international relations

Current Research Projects

• Doctoral thesis: '"The History of the Present Century": writing European news at the end of the 17th Century between history and political intelligence'.  This project focusses on the development of a singular kind of work in the United Provinces in the late 17th-century: the history of the European present. 
  It consists on the one hand of a study of a new kind of editorial production, published in French and dedicated to recent political events on the European stage, attempting to grasp the context which gave rise to it and paying particular attention to the intellectual and cultural implications of its success in late 17th-century Europe; and, on the other, it endeavours to shed light on the particular careers of a new category of professional writers who, by making themselves historians, newswriters, editors and (occasionally) spies, succeeded in imposing themselves on the European political scene and, in a few cases, in earning a living by their writing.

• Member of 'Diplomatie et Paix', a research group co-ordinated through the University of Paris-IV (Sorbonne) working on early modern international relations.
